BOOKS EXHIBITION (ON THE EVE OF ‘WORLD BOOK DAY’)

On the occasion of World Book Day, the Department of Library and Information Science of Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized a book exhibition for the staff and students. It was an excellent platform to explore a wide range of books.  The collection of books on display was impressive that consist of subjects like Hindi and English Literature, History, Electronics, Political Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Commerce, etc. 

The book exhibition and free distribution were organized with the sole objective of creating an affinity for reading books and to entice more students to increase footfall.  The exhibition attracted a large number of students from different streams, including Arts, Science, and Commerce. The students seemed genuinely interested in exploring the collection of books on display and spent hours browsing them and taking away books of their choice. The organization of the exhibition was impeccable, and the response from the students and staff was overwhelming.

The book exhibition was inaugurated by the Arham College Principal Dr. Sachin Bhosale accompanied by the Principal, Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce Prof. Dr. Aftab Anwar, among the teaching staff members Dr. Hamid Hashmi, Dr. Wafiya, Dr. Abul Bari, Dr. Jawed Akhtar, Dr. Shaikh Shakir, Dr. Baba Shaikh, and from non-teaching Mr. Shaikh Ismail and Mr. Sadiq Pathan attended the exhibition.

The book exhibition cum free distribution of books exhibition organized at the college was a grand success led by Dr. Shaikh Muhammad Zuber Director of the Knowledge Resource Centre assisted by Miss. Shaikh Rubina, Mr. Mir Ashraf, Mr. Pathan Shafi, Mr. Tanveer Shaikh, Mr. Khan Irkamuddin, Mrs. Shaikh Ayesha.

‘READING INSPIRATION DAY’

CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM

15th October 2022 was celebrated as ‘Reading Inspiration Day’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. He is a sought-after personality, especially among students. The Maharashtra Government declared 15th October 2022 the birth anniversary of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to celebrate as ‘Reading Inspiration Day’ to honour his hard work, dedication, and determination that encompassed his remarkable life.

On the occasion, the Poona College Knowledge Resource Centre celebrated the day as “Library Open Day” where staff and students of Poona College visited the Library and spent time referring to the books of their choice.

Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh inaugurated the event and addressed the students that the library is the place where knowledge can be gathered and we are committed to fulfilling all the information needs of all the students. He encourages students to visit the library, assuring the books recommended by them will be procured provided they should read and develop the reading habit.

Dr. Muhammad Zuber also briefs the students about library services. He informed the students that the library is presently has 70000+ physical books, e-books 7,99,500 and e-journals 6000+. The library collection is so vast that it can provide reading material almost on all topics.

The members of the library staff provided an exclusive service to the students for locating the desired book in the book stack room and through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).

Amongst the members of the teaching staff - Mr. Musharraf Husaain, Dr. Saleem Maniyar, Dr. Afreen Ahmed, Dr. Gulab Pathan, visited the library.

READ TO LEAD

Celebration of National Reading Day 2022

20th June 2022

The Library of Poona College was jam-packed with students attending the Institution Level Seminar on “Read to Lead” organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the Department of Library and Information Science, and the Department of English and Postgraduate Centre.

Mrs. Kajal Chhatija, Executive Director of Gayatri Group of Schools and Founder of EduDrone – We Connect, was invited as a resource person. She highlighted the importance of reading and writing in leading one’s personal and professional life. Herself a creative writer who has three books to her credit, she explained the process of creative writing and elaborated on how reading and writing help one not only to live life meaningfully but also to make a living. The student participants were highly motivated to continue their interest in reading and writing. The seminar attracted an overwhelming response from the students.    

Under the able guidance of Prof. Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh Principal, Poona College, Dr. Shaikh Iqbal IQAC Coordinator and Vice-Principal (Science), Mr. Khan Moinuddin Vice-Principal (Arts), the seminar was coordinated successfully. Ms. Zeenat Merchant (Coordinator and Head Department of English and Postgraduate Centre) presented a report comprising the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities organized by the Department at the National and International Level and Dr. Shaikh Muhammad Zuber A.M. (Coordinator and Librarian Department of Library and Information Science) presented the theme of the seminar. They were assisted by Mr. Asif Khan, Mr. Zameer Sayyed and Dr. Ashwini Purude. Miss. Nazneen Shikalgar, a student of FYBA recited a few verses from the Holy Quran, Miss. Masuma Khan, student of SYBA introduced the keynote speaker and Miss. Reem Sayyed, student of FYBA proposed the vote of thanks.

BOOKS EXHIBITION

The Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce celebrated World Book Day on 23rd April 2022 during which the Department of Library and Information Science organized a Grand Book Exhibition where informative books including some of the exclusive and rare collections in the prized possession of the college were put on display for reference. In this era of online search platforms, when the reading habit among the masses is on a downward trend, the massive participation of students and staff in this book exhibition has indeed led to reigniting the reading passion amongst them. Everyone seemed to be impressed by browsing the exclusive collections of books that were rare and unique.

The book exhibition was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh in the presence of Vice-Principals Prof. Moinuddin Khan, Dr. Iqbal N Shaikh and Vice-Chairman of the Library Advisory Committee Prof. Shaikh Irfan Janmohammed. Post-inauguration, the Principal interacted with the staff and students and highlighted the importance and need of book reading thereby emboldening the reading habit among the masses. “Books inspire and facilitate in developing the personality and increasing knowledge”, he said. The participants were briefed about the books, e-books and Encyclopedia Britannica and the techniques of searching the information in them by the Librarian Dr. Muhammad Zuber Shaikh. Vice-Principal Dr. A.K.Walunj later visited the exhibition.

On a global scale, World Book Day is celebrated by UNESCO on April 23, every year. This year's theme for World Book and Copyright Day 2022 is “Read, so you never feel low”. The celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the scope of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures. Books are a very powerful tool that helps in combating contemporary challenges, understanding political and economic conditions and giving solace to the heart and soul of the human being, the institutional-level celebration of World Book Day at Poona College has also contributed to furthering the cause of book reading.

Book Exhibition cum Free Distribution of Books
29th November to 1st December 2021

A three-day book exhibition and free distribution of books was organized at Poona College Library on Monday, November 29, 2021. The program was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh. Expressing his views to the students participating in the program, he said, "The purpose of organizing book exhibition and free distribution of books is to educate the youth of the new generation. It is to spread educational awareness by creating a love of reading and studying, so that scientific, academic and literary
consciousness develops among the students.

The Librarian, Dr. Shaikh Muhammad Zuber elaborated that this program can be estimated from the fact that more than 1,200 books were distributed free of charge, which will create affinity amongst students and will help to develop reading habits.

Students, members of teaching staff viz. Dr. Ilyas Syed, Department of Botany, Dr. Abdul Bari, Dr. Shahid Jamal Ansari, and Mr. Syed Vakil, from non-teaching staff, Ms. Rubina Sheikh, Mr. Arif Salahuddin, Mr. Mir Ashraf Ali, Mr. Ikramuddin and Mr. Tanveer were also present in large numbers.

An Institution-Level Online Book Review Presentation Competition

to Commemorate  the Birth Anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

as "Reading Inspiration Day" on 15th October 2021

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Department of Library & Information Science, Department of English and Postgraduate Center, Department of Hindi and Department of Urdu, Arabic and Persian organized an Institution level Book-review Writing Presentation Competition to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as Reading Inspiration Day on 15th October 2021.

The objective was to encourage reading habits among students, to train them in the skill of critical appreciation of texts and to teach review writing skills to the students. Eleven students contested for the prize. The winners were given away a cash prize and a copy of APJ’s autobiography Wings of Fire.

In his presidential address, Prof. (Dr.) Aftab Anwar Shaikh, Principal of Poona College, applauded the contestants for their choice of book for review and their beautiful presentation. Further, he suggested continuing to organise such competitions, so to boost students’ interest in reading and writing.

Ms. Zeenat Merchant (English), Dr. Shakir Shaikh (Hindi) and Dr. Abdul Bari (Urdu) acted as judges for the said competition, Dr. Muhammad Zuber as Coordinator of the programe,. Mr. Musharraf Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics announced the names of Prize winners of the competition and Dr. Ashwini Purude proposed the vote of thanks.

Online Quiz Competition on the eve of the Birth Anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

The Department of Library and Information Science of Y & M Anjuman Khairul Islam’s Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune has organized an Online Quiz Competition on the eve of the Birth Anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan who is known as the Father of Library Science in India which is celebrated as National Librarians’ Day on 12th August 2021 every year. A total of 135 librarians and interested participants took part in this competition and online auto certificates were issued on successful completion.

The Department of English and Post Graduate Center and the Department of Library Science organized a National Level Webinar on 19th June ,2021 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mr. P. N. Panicker, also referred to as ‘National Reading Day’.The 26th National Reading Day comprised a webinar in which Mr.Moinuddin Khan ,Vice Princpal,Arts,Faculty welcomed the delegates. Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh ,Principal,Poona College was the Key Note speaker for the webinar. Dr.Girish Kumar,Assistant Professor Library and Information Science ,Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi who acted as one of the Resource persons spoke on the Life and Contribution of Mr. P. N. Panicker, Dr.Salim Muzaffer Shaikh, Former Professor of English & Creative Writer,King Saud University,Saudi Arabia the next Resouce Person gave a talk on ‘Reading: Food for the Soul which made the delegates aware of the spiritual upliftment caused by reading.

As per the directives the webinar also included a talk on the ‘Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Higher Education and its Management ‘ by Dr. Anwar Parvez Sayed,a Pulmonologist and Infectious Diseases Specialist, Country Director of I-TECH India and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Global Health, University of Washington, US.

One-Week National Level Professional Development Programme (PDW) cum Webinar on
Development of Real-Time E-Content for Virtual Teaching

In this tech-savvy era, the work domain of teachers has gone beyond the traditional teaching and learning to include their contribution to solving societal problems related to childhood, adolescence, family relationships and others in our lives. These social problems have brought our youth to the brink of destruction. If the teachers are successful in reaching out to eliminate these dangers, only then can we expect peace, harmony and tranquillity in our society. These thoughts were expressed by the Director of the International Centre and Head of the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Khare while inaugurating One Week long National Level Professional Development Workshop (PDW) cum Webinar entitled “ Development of Real-Time E-Content for Virtual Teaching” being organized by the Department of Library and Information Science and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune in collaboration with Knowledge Bridge, Ahmednagar during 13th to 19th January 2020.

            The inaugural session was telecasted live on the Poona College YouTube Channel. The Resource Persons Shri. Bhushan Kulkarni and Shri. Eknath Kore of Knowledge Bridge, Ahmednagar conducted live webinar sessions on the Poona College YouTube Channel on making interactive PowerPoint Presentations, live streaming on YouTube and personalized channels from 13th to 16th January 2020. The on-site training from 17th to 19th January 2020 was on Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) with hands-on practical sessions in which participants shot their own video lectures. Thirty-nine (39) participants attended this event with many telecasting live on YouTube while others shot their video lectures in the studio especially set up for the event.             Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh welcomed the guests and exhorted the participants to effectively utilize their time in making them global teachers beyond their local horizon. Librarian and PDW Coordinator Dr. Shaikh Muhammad Zuber Abdul Majeed introduced the chief guest while Vice-Principal Mr. Iqbal Shaikh proposed vote of thanks in the presence of PIMSE Director Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, Vice-Principals Dr. Arif Shaikh, Mr. Moinuddin Khan, and Library Advisory Committee Vice-Chairman Mr. Irfan Shaikh. The event was convened by A. Prof. Musharraf Hussain.

Books on Wheels Exhibition  

Anjuman Khairul Islams Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized a one-day ‘Books Exhibition on Wheels” sponsored by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language on 28th November 2019. The bus with the Urdu Language books published by NCPUL visited the Poona College from New Delhi and was stationed the whole day on the college ground from 08. A. M. to 04 P.M. for their students and staff members.

It was an institution-level exhibition where staff and students enthusiastically participated and purchased books of their choice. They have not only purchased prescribed syllabus books but reference books as well and have shown their literary passion for the Urdu language. 

Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh along with students and staff members inspected the books on the wheel library and recommended a few books to be purchased for Poona College Library. He encouraged the students and staff members to purchase books published by NCPUL. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to NCPUL for the splendid work undertaken by NCPUL for the Urdu-knowing readers.

The Department of Library and Information Science organized the Library Orientation - Know Your Library programme for the newly enrolled students for the year 2019-2020 on 30th and 31st August 2019. They have been introduced to library services, facilities and acquainted with the library resources.

Two-Day National Level, Faculty Development Programme (FDP) 
E-Content Development for Effective Teaching

            Teachers who adapt and reform in this Technology-driven era can significantly lead to developments manifesting in the progress of our nation ultimately leading to the progress of human civilization. The use of digital means for teaching has numerous advantages such as its reach with countless repeatability in the physical absence of a teacher, impeccable and assured quality along with the portability to upgrade and improve. These thoughts were expressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Savitribai Phule Pune University Dr. Arvind Shaligram while inaugurating the Two day National Level Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Electronic-Content Development for Effective Teaching” being organized by the Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce and sponsored by Yateemkhana and Madrasa Anjuman Khairul Islam Trust, Mumbai. He also stressed on the critical importance of the teacher’s role in the development of our nation.

            The FDP was conducted in collaboration with “Knowledge Bridge” Founders Shri. Bhushan Kulkarni and Shri. Eknath Kore, Spanning over two days, the FDP had 10 rigorous, back-to-back technical sessions during which innovative and reformative technical tips were given by the resource persons to make teaching more effective and appealing, to the present-day learning community. The unique feature of this FDP was the suggestions that don’t require heavy investments and are achievable by just using commonly used cell phones and easily available software and apps.

            The inaugural session was presided over by the Trustee Mr. Mirza Salat Baig in the presence of the Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh, Prof. Moinuddin Khan, Prof. Iqbal Shaikh, Dr.Tarique Imam and the FDP Coordinator Dr. Shaikh M. Zuber Abdul Majeed. The FDP was attended by over 170 participants from all over India including city colleges, NGOs, schools and medical personnel from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The event was convened by Prof. Musharraf Hussain. In his valedictory address, the Senior Advisor of  Poona College Dr. M.R.Sarkhawas exhorted the participants to work at the grass root level and improvise in spite of the adversities one may face.

            Dr. Ajay Mootha, a leading Dentist cum Professor of a Medical College who attended this FDP expressed satisfaction over the possibility of bringing reforms in the teaching of his medical subjects. Dr. Prashant Kadam from Goa contented that he will now be a better teacher than before. Similar impressions were given by Physics teacher Dr. Mrs. Naseem Deshpande and a medical counseller, Dr. Mrs. Amolika Chaudhary. At the end vote of thanks was given by FDP coordinator Dr. Shaikh M. Zuber Abdul Majeed.
